On Sunday, January 2, 2022, our dearly beloved Emma Ruth Cooper Smith 85, of Hamptonville, NC, transitioned from labor to eternal rest at home surrounded by her loved ones. She was born July 8, 1936 in Fall Creek, Yadkin County, NC to Homer Cooper and Ruby Martin Cooper.
She attended Yadkin County Public Schools and graduated from Booneville High School. Emma earned a Bachelor' of Science Degree in Nursing from Winston Salem State University in 1959. Her nursing career began at Kings County Hospital Center in Brooklyn, New York, where she worked for several years before moving to Washington, DC. She was united in marriage to Harold M. Smith Sr., on August 26, 1961. She continued her work as the Head Nurse /Operating Room at Washington Hospital Center and retired from private nursing in North Carolina.
Emma loved to spend time working outside in the yard, nurturing her garden and the beautiful flowers she kept in her home. She was also an active member of the NC Democratic Association, promoting candidates for office and helped to setup voter registration in her community. She loved to travel and would often break out her photo albums to share her experiences.
She was a faithful member of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church, cheerfully attending various functions until she became disabled. She served in many capacities, including Secretary of the Sunday School, member of the Church Choir, and Delegate for the Yadkin - Davie Association, just to name a few.
Emma was preceded in death by her parents, Homer Cooper and Ruby Martin Cooper; two sons, Kenny Brown and Duane Fredrick Smith Sr.; four brothers, Fredrick Cooper, James Cooper (Sonny), Homer Cooper Jr. (Frank), and Steve Cooper.
Emma will be lovingly remembered by her husband of 60 years, Harold M. Smith Sr., Hamptonville, NC; her son, Harold Smith Jr., Hamptonville, NC; her god-daughter, Shanlyn Nichols; three grandchildren, Felicia Maddox, Statesville, NC, Duane F. Smith Jr., Hamptonville, NC, and Bradley Smith, Hamptonville, NC; seven great-grandchildren, Rasean Sturgis, Mia Smyre, Jaila Rucker, Arie Rucker, Noah Smith, Elijah Smith, and Noelle Smith; three sisters, Barbara Russell, Ann Avent, and Carolyn Nichols; one brother, Donald Cooper; one sister-in-law, Shelby Turner; and a host of special nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.
A Celebration of life for Emma Ruth Cooper Smith's will be held on Saturday, January 8, 2022 at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church, 4789 Harmony Hwy., Hamptonville, NC 27020. The family will receive visitors at 1:00PM and the service will begin at 1:30PM. Interment will follow in Pleasant Hill Baptist Church Cemetery.
