Jason Thomas Dittmer, 53, of Charlotte, NC, passed away unexpectedly on July 24, 2025. He was born in Decatur, Illinois, on September 23, 1971, to Tom and Karen Dittmer.
As the youngest sibling, Jason was lovingly doted on by his sisters, Tracie and Kelley. Kelley, in particular, took on a motherly role, and the two shared a bond that remained strong throughout their lives.
Jason was known for his sharp intellect, vast knowledge, warm smile, quick wit, and generous heart. He had a deep love for science fiction and fantasy—especially Star Trek, Rick and Morty, Stephen King, Cormac McCarthy, The Lord of the Rings, and Game of Thrones. A true music aficionado, Jason had a lifelong passion for guitar—particularly Ibanez guitars—and a deep admiration for Stevie Ray Vaughan. A perfectionist by nature, he spent countless hours practicing and creating music. As a guitarist for the Lil Jones Band, he took immense pride in bringing joy to others through his performances.
Jason believed in standing up for what was right and fighting for equality and the greater good. Whether making music, gaming, or telling stories, his infectious spirit drew people to him. His love, passion, and unforgettable laughter will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Above all, Jason's greatest joy came from being with those he loved—especially his beloved wife, Melissa. From the beginning, they were inseparable. Melissa embraced Jason's Ibanez guitars as their children, and Jason, in turn, lovingly tolerated her musical tastes and passion for scary movies. Their bond was built on love, humor, trust, and unwavering friendship. Though their time together was far too short, a lifetime still wouldn't have been enough.
Jason is survived by his wife, Melissa Murphy of Charlotte, NC; his parents, Tom and Karen Dittmer of Cary, NC; his sister Tracie Otto Dierickx (Carl) of Raleigh, NC; his grandmother Ellen Witbart of Moweaqua, IL; four nieces and nephews; seven great-nieces and nephews; his bandmates from the Lil Jones Band—Elizabeth Jones, Steve Macallen, Kyle Glady, and Rick Arcia—and a host of extended family and friends. He was preceded in death by his sister, Kelley Sue LeMaster.
Jason lived by the motto: "Never give up. Never back down. Follow your heart and fight," and he embodied those words every day of his life.
His memory will live on in the hearts of those who loved him. We will remember Jason for his boundless love, his ability to turn every moment into an adventure, and the way he made everyone feel seen, heard, and valued.
A private graveside service celebrating Jason's life will be held at Oaklawn Cemetery on August 11, 2025, at 1 P.M. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Samaritan's Purse – Hurricane Helene Relief.
