Ms. Jean Byrd

April 21, 1975 — May 23, 2025

Winston - Salem

Jean Renee Byrd was born on April 21, 1975, at Children's Hospital in Philadelphia, PA. She was the beloved daughter of Jean Glenn (mother) and (D) Nathaniel D. Byrd (father). Jean was the youngest of her siblings and the cherished daughter of both parents. She was a loving, caregiving protector to her older sister, Stacy Byrd-Walker, and her older brother, Nathaniel "Nate" D. Byrd Jr. She leaves behind her baby brother, David, also known as Khalil Sturgis. From an early age, Jean developed a passion for basketball, singing, dancing, cosmetology, and "hanging out with the boys on the block," where she quickly earned love and respect for her toughness, athletic abilities, and hilarious sense of humor. She graduated from Overbrook High School in 1992 and went on to further her skills in cosmetology, becoming a licensed cosmetologist in 1994. A few years later, Jean joined the Army to serve her country for a year and a half . Jean was affectionately known by many nicknames throughout her life—"Nae," "Little Jean," "JB," and "Pebbles"—but she became most widely known as "Ma Dukes." Jean was a devoted single mother of six surviving children and a proud grandmother of three. Her firstborn, Miean Davis, gave Jean her first two grandchildren: Syncere Davis—who shared Jean's birthday on April 21—and Zoei Davis Kinnard. Her second-born, son Marquan Matthews, gave her a third grandchild, Krishae Matthews. Her third-born daughter was Meioni Brightman, followed by her youngest two children: daughter Meilean Byrd and son Marsuan McCoy Byrd. Jean also embraced her earlier adopted son, Solomon Wallace, as one of her own. She delighted in spoiling her grandchildren—not only with gifts but with unconditional love. She taught her children to be strong, to embrace their true selves, to stay positive, and to uphold the values she instilled in them. Jean was more than just a woman—she was a superhero. Her one-of-a-kind personality, unwavering love, and unmatched support made her the heart of her family. She did everything she could for her kids and loved ones. She was a devoted grandmother, a loving stepdaughter to James Glenn, and even a manager for her son's rap group. She opened her home to anyone in need, lent an ear to those who felt unheard , offered comfort to those who felt unseen, and brought healing to those who were broken. Jean was the "realest "person in every sense—authentic, bold, and full of grace. Raised to be a woman of God ,Jean Renee Byrd was truly a saint. She never allowed her mistakes to define her character or her goals. She will be deeply and forever missed.
