Marie Lyons, our beloved mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, cousin, and friend, transitioned peacefully at her home on Saturday, July 15, 2017. "Ree," as she was affectionately known to family and friends, was born November 8, 1946 to the late Charlie Lester Lyons and Julia Bohannon Lyons in Farmington, North Carolina. At an early age, Marie accepted Christ as her Lord and Savior and joined Cedar Creek Baptist Church in Farmington, North Carolina. Later in her life, she joined Beautiful Zion Baptist Church in Lewiston, North Carolina, under the leadership of her favorite pastor, the late Reverend James R. Wiggins. The family relocated to Halifax County, where Marie attended Halifax County schools and graduated from Brawley High School in Scotland Neck, North Carolina in 1965. Upon graduation, Marie relocated to New York City and was employed as a housekeeper. She later moved to the Washington, D.C. area and was employed with a local hospital as an environmental service technician. After numerous of years living and working up north, she decided to move back home to be closer to her family in Bertie County. While in Bertie, she worked for Weyhauser for many years before retiring. Marie moved to Durham, North Carolina six years ago and resided there until her death. Marie met and touched many lives far and near. She was never a stranger to anyone. Marie had a love for cooking and eating. Marie was one of a kind; it was her way or no way. Marie was preceded in death by her grandparents Rachel Bohannon and Lula Mae Lyons; siblings Rachel Brock Fowler, Sallie Lyons, Nora Lyons Wiggins, and twin brothers Lester and Chester Lyons. Marie leaves to cherish her memories her one and only daughter, Mrs. Cynthia Lyons Battle (Hugh) of Kelford, North Carolina; two grandchildren, Hughstin and Hughshuree Battle of Kelford, North Carolina; four sisters, Ms. Shirley Lyons and Ms. Alice Lyons of Lewiston, North Carolina, Mrs. Jackie Lyons White (David) of Durham, North Carolina, and Ms. Minnie Lyons Carter of Atlanta, Georgia; one Aunt, Ms. Ruby Lyons of Advance, North Carolina; many nieces and nephews too numerous to name; a host of cousins; special friends she spoke with every day, Mrs. Juliette Craig and Mr. Richard Rankins of Windsor, North Carolina, and Mr. Frank Moore of Williamston, North Carolina; her loving and caring nurse Ms. Tisha Lampe of Raleigh, North Carolina; and other friends. We dearly thank God for granting our beloved mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, cousin, and friend 70 years of life. She will be greatly missed by all the lives she touched.
