Carl Watkins entered eternal rest in the early morning hours of August 14, 2026, leaving behind a legacy of family devotion, quiet strength, kindness, and a willingness to help others.
Carl was born in Mocksville, North Carolina, on October 21, 1964, to the late John and Genelle Payne Watkins. He was preceded in death by a brother, John K. Watkins, and a sister, Lori Watkins Rhodes.
A proud 1983 graduate of Davie County High School, Carl took great pride in his years as a school bus driver while in high school. Following graduation, he entered the Army National Guard, where he made many memories and often enjoyed recounting stories of his time in the Mojave Desert.
Carl worked as a concrete finisher until his health declined. He later devoted himself to caring for his parents, a testament to the love and commitment he had for his family. Throughout his neighborhood, Carl was known for his many talents, generous spirit, and willingness to lend a helping hand. He became affectionately known as the neighborhood bicycle trainer, barber, and handyman. Whether a child wanted to learn how to ride a bike without training wheels, someone needed a haircut, or a helping hand, Carl was there. His calm and steady demeanor earned him the beloved nickname “Cool Carl,” a name that perfectly captured the spirit of the man so many loved.
Carl joined Friendship Baptist Church at an early age. His family, community and friendships were important parts of his life. He cherished spending time with those he loved and could find joy in any occasion that brought family and friends together.
Carl held a special place in his heart for his nieces and nephews and played an instrumental role in their upbringing. Through his love, guidance, encouragement, and presence, he made a lasting difference in their lives. The lessons he shared and the memories they created together will remain with them for years to come.
Left to cherish his memory are his sisters, Carolyn D. Yon (Larry) and Avis Watkins-Smith (Rickey); his brother, James“Tank” Watkins; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends; his best friend, Cisero Jones; and his caregiver/friend, Barry Melton.
Carl will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him. His kindness, quiet strength, calm spirit, helping hands, and unwavering devotion to his family will forever remain in the hearts of those he leaves behind. Though he is no longer with us, the love he gave, the lives he touched, and the memories he created will continue to carry his legacy forward.
Rest peacefully, Cool Carl. Your work here is done, but your love and memory will live on forever.
