Mr. Walter Ransom Culbertson, 85, passed away at home on Tuesday, August 25, 2026. He was born April 14, 1941, in Rowan County to the late Marvin Culbertson and Essie Mae (Oakley) Culbertson.
Walter graduated from R.A. Clement High School in Cleveland, NC. He worked for 27 years as a laborer at Allied Automotive (Bendix) and later spent 12 years at Performance Fibers, where he retired.
Walter married Shirley (Strange) Culbertson in 1962 in Salisbury, NC, and they shared 59 happy years together. He was a member of Mt. Vernon Presbyterian Church, where he served as a Ruling Elder and had previously served as Clerk of Session and treasurer. He was also a Mason and enjoyed fishing and bowling.
In addition to his parents, Walter was preceded in death by his wife, Shirley Culbertson; his brother, Marvin (Carolyn) Culbertson; and his sisters, Mary Frances (John) Taylor, Grace (Thomas) Jones, and Rosetta (Tyrone) Askew.
Walter is survived by his five children: Sylvester (Tracy) Culbertson, Deborah Culbertson, and Ryan (Tiffany) Culbertson, all of Cleveland, NC; Dwayne (Emily) Culbertson of Davidson, NC; and Abdulla (Bouchra) Wali-Uddin, formerly Raynard Culbertson, of Spencer, NC. He is also survived by his brother, Roman (Dorothy) Culbertson of Cleveland, NC; his uncle, Gary Hall of Cleveland, NC; and a special brother-in-law, Walter (Mary) Rankin of Troutman, NC. He was blessed with 18 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, 10 great-great-grandchildren, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins
